The "Vita breve" by Giulio Salvadori was born as a critical review of the "Vie de St. François d'Assise" by the Protestant historian Paul Sabatier (1894), a milestone that marked the start, amid heated controversy, of a prodigious revival of studies Franciscans whose term is still unknown today. The reaction of the Catholic scholar, far removed from any polemical spirit, was exemplary and he grasped with clarity the essentials of the French scholar's position, which he recognized in the Salvadori's writings the "more detailed and cordial intervention I read about my book". Starting from this book the two remained bound throughout their lives in an exemplary friendship rich in works of social commitment. This new edition of "Short Life" was introduced, edited and annotated with exquisite finesse and expertise by Paolo Vian, Librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library, where the fund of the manuscripts by Giulio Salvadori is preserved.

GIULIO SALVADORI (1862 - 1928), disciple of Carducci, friend of D'Annunzio, poet and essayist, after a painful conversion to Catholicism that led him to be part of the Franciscan Third Order, was the first professor of Italian literature in the newly formed University Cattolica of Milan (1923).
